Knoxville and The Little Fish
Knoxville - The Little Fish Controversy
Little fish have turned up on the streets of Knoxville. The fish observers state have fallen from the sky. No bigger than your little finger the little fish are a mystery. Some regard the little fish as a answer to a prayer.
"You see little fish fall from the sky," Roger Bells said. "On account of people praying for a miracle to help remind folks of the power of prayer. You know that them fish don't normally fall from the sky. So something must have gotten them to drop."
"I suspect," said Molly Grimmel, "the little fish are trying to tell us something. Perhaps they know something we don't know. I sense this is a test of our faith. Our powers of observations. Our ability to think clearly."
"The fish are from heaven. That's the place they come from. Let's face it. People needed proof of heaven. So the Lord sent us fish. Little fish."
"I know folks who try to catch them bare-handed. Or they let them fall into their hats. And some are reporting that the little fish swim in the clouds and slip down as a result of people calling up to them."
"I can't pretend to know how many people have retrieved the little fish and place in bowls. The little fish are swimming in bowls all over Knoxville. We are all acting out of good intentions. The little fish have turned us into good Samaritans."
"Oh, I imagine a few of us have picked them and brought them. Fried them. I hear they make a tasty sandwich. Though I don't understand why people who do eat them tell of growing taller, a inch or two. Or people being happier because they ate the little fish. I'd say the people might be exaggerating. Though I do know one fellow who ate the little fish and he couldn't stop smiling."
"He knew things he didn't before eating the little fish. Like what stock to invest. He suddenly could do all sorts of things. He was full of more energy. He mowed the lawn, painted the garage. He trimmed the hedges."
"He bought his wife flowers. Azaleas. He told her how much he adored her. The Little Fish had gotten to him, you know. He became a perfectly good fellow. Stopped smoking, biting his nails, watching R-rated movies. Got to hand it to those little fish."
"I can tell you the weather report in Knoxville overlooked the little fish. It's not something you can predict. Can you predict a miracle?"
"I don't cotton to no fish from heaven", said Betty Millet. "That theory don't hunt with me. What I figure is that the little fish are symbols of the need in Knoxville for something greater than ourselves. The little fish have been known to attract a sense of wonder."
"Which some of us in Knoxville have forgot. We see the stray cats prowl around and eat up the fish. And what do the cats do after they eat them little fish? Why them cats all head for the church and snooze and purr on the churchsteps. Thanking the Lord."
"Yes they are some of us who use the little fish for bait. And have caught some whoppers. That's a sign that we believe in using what we got to do the best we can. The little fish have brought the best in us."
"The truth of the little fish is not easily understood. When something wonderful happens we are skeptical and some of us doubt the many facets of the incredible. But there they are. These little fish lying in the yards and streets of Knoxville. They all are scented like wild flowers. Have you noticed they don't smell. They glimmer like costume jewelry."
"Children pick them up and place them close to their ears. The little fish whisper bible verses. What gifts heaven brings to us are surely no less wondrous than to listen to the little fish. And strive to understand how such little miracles enrich our lives, if only to add mystery and improve our fishing."
